What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting very fine, sterile and single use needles into specific points on the body. These points stimulate the body’s natural healing response, helping to balance energy (Qi), improve circulation, and support physical and emotional well-being.

What does the scientific research say?

Scientific research on acupuncture has grown over the past few decades, with studies showing positive results for conditions like chronic pain, migraines, tension headaches, and knee osteoarthritis. While more research is needed to fully explain how acupuncture works from a biomedical perspective, many health organizations, including the World Health Organization, recognize acupuncture as a valid complementary therapy for various conditions.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people find acupuncture to be very comfortable. You might feel a slight pinch as the needle goes in, followed by a sensation of warmth, tingling, or heaviness. The needles are much thinner than those used for injections, and many patients feel relaxed or even fall asleep during treatment.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is very safe when performed by a qualified practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. Side effects are rare and typically mild, such as slight bruising or temporary soreness at the needle site.

How many acupuncture sessions do I need?

The number of sessions depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your overall health. Some people feel improvement after just 1-3 treatments, while chronic issues may need more regular sessions over several weeks. We’ll discuss a personalized plan after your initial consultation.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can help with a wide range of conditions, including pain (back, neck, joints), migraines, digestive issues, stress and anxiety, insomnia, women’s health concerns, fertility support, and more. Feel free to contact me if you have a specific condition in mind.

What should I expect during my first acupuncture session?

At your first appointment, we’ll discuss your health history, main concerns, and treatment goals. You’ll receive an acupuncture treatment tailored to you, which typically lasts 20-40 minutes. Many people feel relaxed or peaceful afterward.

What should I wear to an acupuncture appointment?

It’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arms and legs. Depending on the treatment area, I may ask you to roll up sleeves or pants or provide a towel for draping.

Are the acupuncture needles sterile and single-use?

Absolutely. I use only sterile, single-use, disposable needles for every treatment to ensure your safety and hygiene.

Can I exercise after an acupuncture session?

Light movement or gentle stretching is fine after acupuncture, but I recommend avoiding intense workouts right after your treatment. Give your body some time to integrate the effects and stay hydrated.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance in Spain?

In Spain, acupuncture is generally not covered by the public health system, but some private health insurance plans may reimburse part of the cost. It’s best to check directly with your insurance provider.

Can acupuncture help with back pain?

Yes, acupuncture is widely used for back pain relief. It can help reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and trigger natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body, providing both immediate and long-term benefits.

Is acupuncture effective for migraines and headaches?

Acupuncture has been shown to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines and headaches for many people. It works by regulating nervous system activity, improving blood flow, and calming stress-related triggers.

Does acupuncture work for anxiety and stress?

Acupuncture is an excellent natural approach for managing anxiety and stress. It helps balance the nervous system, reduces cortisol levels, and promotes a sense of calm and relaxation.

Can acupuncture help with fertility or IVF support?

Yes, acupuncture is often used to support fertility naturally or alongside IVF treatments. It can help regulate menstrual cycles, improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, and reduce stress—factors that may contribute to better reproductive outcomes.
